what was the messiah’s task?

in this study we will be looking at the task of the messiah, and come to the understanding of exactly what he came to do.

brit chadesha - new covenant

21 “and she shall give birth to a son, and you shall call his name יהושע for he shall save his people from their sins

  • what is sin?
  • how are we saved from our sin?

6 ‘but you, bĕyth leḥem, in the land of yehuḏah, you are by no means least among the rulers of yehuḏah, for out of you shall come a ruler who shall shepherd my people yisra’ĕl

11 i indeed immerse you in water unto repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than i, whose sandals i am not worthy to bear. he shall immerse you in the set-apart spirit and fire.

12 his winnowing fork is in his hand, and he shall thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor, and gather his wheat into the storehouse, but the chaff he shall burn with unquenchable fire

4:17-19, 23

17 from that time יהושע began to proclaim and to say, “repent, for the reign of the heavens has drawn near.”

18 and יהושע, walking by the sea of galil, saw two brothers, shimʽon called kĕpha, and andri his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

19 and he said to them, “follow me, and i shall make you fishers of men...

23 and יהושע went about all galil, teaching in their congregations, and proclaiming the good news of the reign, and healing every disease and every bodily weakness among the people

  • repent from what?
  • what is sin?
  • what is the good news?
  • who's reign is messiah referring to?

17 do not think that i came to destroy the torah or the prophets. i did not come to destroy but to complete

  • complete = to do it, to live it...

8:3-4, 16-17

3 and stretching out his hand יהושע touched him, saying, “i desire it. be cleansed!” and immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

4 and יהושע said to him, “see, mention it to no one. but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that mosheh commanded, as a witness to them...

16 and when evening had come, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed. and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick,

17 that it might be filled what was spoken by yeshayahu the prophet, saying, “he himself took our weaknesses and bore our sicknesses

  • cleansing people
  • why do we get sick?
  • how do i get cleansed from my sickness?
  • how are we demon-possessed?
  • how can these demon-possessed spirits be cast out by words?
  • which words has the power to cast out the spirits of the demon-possessed?

9:2-6, 12-13, 35

2 and see, they were bring to him a paralytic lying on a bed. and יהושע, seeing their belief, said to the paralytic, “take courage, son, your sins have been forgiven.”

3 and see, some of the scribes said to themselves, “this one blasphemes!”

4 and יהושע, knowing their thoughts, said, “why do you think wicked thoughts in your hearts?

5 “for which is easier, to say, ‘your sins have been forgiven,’ or to say, ‘arise and walk’?

6 “but in order for you to know that the son of aḏam possesses authority on earth to forgive sins ” he then said to the paralytic, “rise, take up your bed, and go to your house...

12 and יהושע hearing this, said to them, “those who are strong have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

13 “but go and learn what this means, ‘i desire compassion and not offering.’ for i did not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners...

35 and יהושע went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their congregations, and proclaiming the good news of the reign, and healing every disease and every bodily weakness among the people

  • hebrew parallelism - your sins have been forgiven / arise and walk
  • why do we get sick?
  • how are we healed?
  • who or what is the son of adam?
  • what does it mean to possess authority on earth to forgive sins?
  • what is the good news?
  • who's reign is referred to?
  • take note - proclaiming the good news of the reign, heals diseases and every bodily weaknesses

34 “do not think that i have come to bring peace on earth. i did not come to bring peace but a sword

35 for i have come to bring division, a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law

  • take note that sword = division
  • what does it mean to bring division?
  • what is it that creates this division?

2 corinthians 6:14-16 do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers. for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness? and what fellowship has light with darkness?

15 And what agreement has messiah with beliyaʽal? or what part does a believer have with an unbeliever?

16 and what union has the dwelling place of elohim with idols? for you are a dwelling place of the living elohim, as elohim has said, “i shall dwell in them and walk among them, and i shall be their elohim, and they shall be my people

john 4:27 and upon this his taught ones came, and they were marvelling that he was speaking with a woman, however, no one said, “what do you seek?” or, “why do you speak with her?

hebrews 4:12 for the word of elohim is living, and working, and sharper than any two-edged sword, cutting through even to the dividing of being and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart

mica 7:5-6 trust no friend, rely on no companion, guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom.

for son is despising father, daughter rises up against her mother, daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, the enemies of a man are the men of his own house

11:4-5, 28-30

4 and יהושע answering, said to them, “go, report to yoḥanan what you hear and see:

5 blind receive sight and lame walk, lepers are cleansed and deaf hear, dead are raised up and poor are brought the good news...

28 come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and i shall give you rest.

29 take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for i am meek and humble in heart, and you shall find rest for your beings.

30 “for my yoke is gentle and my burden is light

18 see, my servant whom i have chosen, my beloved in whom my being did delight. i shall put my spirit upon him, and he shall declare right-ruling to the nations.

19 he shall not strive nor cry out, nor shall anyone hear his voice in the streets.

20 a crushed reed he shall not break, and smoking flax he shall not quench, till he brings forth right-ruling forever.

21 and the nations shall trust in his name

35 so that what was spoken by the prophet might be filled, saying, “i shall open my mouth in parables, i shall pour forth what has been hidden from the foundation of the world

  • he opens his mouth in parables, what does this mean?
  • what does he pour forth that has been hidden from the foundation of the world?
  • remember now, he is speaking in parables 🙂

24 and he answering, said, “i was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of yisra’ĕl

  • who is the lost sheep of the house of yisra'el?

21 from that time יהושע began to show to his taught ones that it was necessary for him to go to yerushalayim, and to suffer much from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and to be raised again the third day

  • he showed then, not told them

11 for the son of aḏam has come to save what was lost.

12 “what do you think? if a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, would he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains, going to seek the one that is straying?

13 “and if he should find it, truly, i say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.

14 “thus it is not the desire of your father who is in the heavens that one of these little ones should be lost

  • he is looking for that one that are lost, the one that used to be part of the 100

28 even as the son of aḏam did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many

  • when we live as he did, that way of live is what will ransom (cover) us

1:8, 21-27, 38

8 i indeed did immerse you in water, but he shall immerse you in the set-apart spirit...

21 and they went into kephar naḥum, and immediately on the sabbath he went into the congregation and taught.

22 and they were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as possessing authority, and not as the scribes.

23 and there was a man in their congregation with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,

24 saying, ha! what have we to do with you, יהושע of natsareth? did you come to destroy us? i know who you are: the set-apart one of elohim!

25 and יהושע rebuked him, saying, be silenced, and come out of him!

26 and throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit called out with a loud voice, and came out of him.

27 and they were all so amazed, as to reason among themselves, saying, what is this, a fresh teaching? with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him!

38 and he said to them, “let us go into the neighbouring towns, so that i proclaim there also, because for this i have come forth.

17 and hearing this, יהושע said to them, those who are strong have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. i did not come to call the righteous to repentance, but sinners.

1:32-33, 79

32 he shall be great, and shall be called the son of the most high. and יהוה elohim shall give him the throne of his father dawiḏ.

33 “and he shall reign over the house of yaʽaqoḇ forever, and there shall be no end to his reign

32 he shall be great, and shall be called the son of the most high. and יהוה elohim shall give him the throne of his father dawiḏ.

33 “and he shall reign over the house of yaʽaqoḇ forever, and there shall be no end to his reign...

79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace

  • what is this light?
  • what is the way of peace?

2:32, 34

32 a light for the unveiling of the gentiles, and the esteem of your people yisra’ĕl...

34 and shimʽon blessed them, and said to miryam his mother, see, this one is set for a fall and rising of many in yisra’ĕl, and for a sign spoken against

  • what is this sign spoken against?

16 yoḥanan answered, saying to them all, i indeed immerse you in water, but one mightier than i is coming, whose sandal straps i am not worthy to loosen. he shall immerse you in the set-apart spirit and fire.

17 his winnowing fork is in his hand, and he shall thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor, and gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he shall burn with unquenchable fire

  • ...and fire, what is this fire?

18 the spirit of יהוה is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring the good news to the poor. he has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send away crushed ones with a release,

19 to proclaim the acceptable year of יהוה.

  • what is the acceptable year of yhwh?

31 and יהושע answering, said to them, those who are well do not need a physician, but those who are sick.

32 i have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance

56 for the son of aḏam did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them. and they went on to another village

49 i came to send fire on the earth, and how i wish it were already kindled!

50 but i have an immersion to be immersed with, and how distressed i am until it is accomplished!

51 do you think that i came to give peace on earth? i say to you, no, but rather division.

52 for from now on five in one house shall be divided, three against two, and two against three –

53 father shall be divided against son, and son against father, mother against daughter, and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law

6 and he spoke this parable, a certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.

7 and he said to the gardener, ‘look, for three years i have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. cut it down, why does it even make the ground useless?’

8 and he answering, said to him, ‘master, leave it this year too, until i dig around it and throw manure.

9 ‘and if indeed it bears fruit, good. but if not so, you shall cut it down

4 what man among you, having a hundred sheep, and having lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?

5 and having found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

6 and having come home, he calls together his friends and neighbours, saying to them, ‘rejoice with me, for i have found my sheep which was lost!

9 and יהושע said to him, today deliverance has come to this house – since he also is a son of aḇraham.

10 for the son of aḏam has come to seek and to save what was lost

21 so they asked him, saying, teacher, we know that you say and teach rightly, and you are not partial to any, but teach the way of elohim truly

1:12-18, 33

12 but as many as received him, to them he gave the authority to become children of elohim, to those believing in his name,

13 who were born, not of blood nor of the desire of flesh nor of the desire of man, but of elohim.

14 and the word became flesh and pitched his tent among us, and we saw his esteem, esteem as of an only brought-forth of a father, complete in favour and truth

15 yoḥanan bore witness of him and cried out, saying, this was he of whom i said, ‘he who comes after me has become before me, because he was before me.’

16 and out of his completeness we all did receive, and favour upon favour,

17 for the torah was given through mosheh – the favour and the truth came through יהושע messiah.

18 no one has ever seen elohim. the only brought-forth son, who is in the bosom of the father, he did declare...

33 and i did not know him, but he who sent me to immerse in water said to me, ‘upon whom you see the spirit coming down and remaining on him, this is he who immerses in the set-apart spirit

  • to you and me he give the will to choose for ourselves...

19 יהושע answered and said to them, destroy this dwelling place, and in three days i shall raise it.

20 then the yehuḏim said, it took forty-six years to build this dwelling place, and you are going to raise it in three days?

21 but he spoke about the dwelling place of his body.

3:16-17, 34

16 for elohim so loved the world that he gave his only brought-forth son, so that everyone who believes in him should not perish but possess everlasting life.

17 for elohim did not send his son into the world to judge the world, but that the world through him might be saved...

34 for he whom elohim has sent speaks the words of elohim, for elohim does not give the spirit by measure

  • ...and remember, he is speaking to us in?
  • who is sent, only speaks yhwh's words!

4:10-17, 25, 34

10 יהושע answered and said to her, if you knew the gift of elohim, and who it is who says to you, ‘give me to drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.

11 the woman said to him, master, you have no vessel, and the well is deep. from where, then, do you have living water?

12 are you greater than our father yaʽaqoḇ, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?”

13 יהושע answered and said to her, everyone drinking of this water shall thirst again,

14 but whoever drinks of the water i give him shall certainly never thirst. and the water that i give him shall become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.

15 the woman said to him, master, give me this water, so that i do not thirst, nor come here to draw.

16 יהושע said to her, go, call your husband, and come here.

17 the woman answered and said, i have no husband.” יהושע said to her, you have well said, ‘I have no husband...

25 the woman said to him, i know that messiah is coming, the one who is called anointed. when that one comes, he shall announce to us all...

34 יהושע said to them, my food is to do the desire of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work

  • what is the gift of elohim?

19 therefore יהושע responded and said to them, “truly, truly, i say to you, the son is able to do none at all by himself, but only that which he sees the father doing, because whatever he does, the son also likewise does.

20 for the father loves the son, and shows him all that he himself does. and greater works than these he is going to show him, in order that you marvel

6:33-38, 51-58

33 for the bread of elohim is he who comes down out of the heaven and gives life to the world.

34 so they said to him, master, give us this bread always.

35 and יהושע said to them, i am the bread of life. he who comes to me shall not get hungry at all, and he who believes in me shall not get thirsty at all.

36 but i said to you that you have seen me, and still do not believe.

37 all that the father gives me shall come to me, and the one who comes to me i shall by no means cast out.

38 because i have come down out of the heaven, not to do my own desire, but the desire of him who sent me...

51 i am the living bread which came down out of the heaven. if anyone eats of this bread, he shall live forever. and indeed, the bread that i shall give is my flesh, which i shall give for the life of the world.

52 the yehuḏim, therefore, were striving with one another, saying, how is this one able to give us his flesh to eat?

53 יהושע therefore said to them, truly, truly, i say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the son of aḏam and drink his blood, you possess no life in yourselves.

54 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood possesses everlasting life, and i shall raise him up in the last day.

55 for my flesh is truly food, and my blood is truly drink.

56 he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood stays in me, and i in him.

57 as the living father sent me, and i live because of the father, so he who feeds on me shall live because of me.

58 this is the bread which came down out of the heaven, not as your fathers ate the manna and died. he who eats this bread shall live forever

  • in a riddle, dream or parable, what would it mean to eat the messiah's flesh and to drink his blood?

7:7, 16-17

7 it is impossible for the world to hate you, but it hates me because i bear witness of it, that its works are wicked...

16 יהושע answered them and said, my teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.

17 if anyone desires to do his desire, he shall know concerning the teaching, whether it is from elohim, or whether i speak from myself

  • to do yhwh's desire, is to know the words of yhwh, and if someone is speaking his/her own words...messiah only spoke his and our abba's words

26 i have much to say and to judge concerning you. but he who sent me is true, and what i heard from him, these words i speak to the world.

27 they did not know that he spoke to them of the father.

28 so יהושע said to them, when you lift up the son of aḏam, then you shall know that i am he, and that i do none at all of myself, but as my father taught me, these words i speak.

29 and he who sent me is with me. the father has not left me alone, for i always do what pleases him.

30 as he was speaking these words, many believed in him.

31 so יהושע said to those yehuḏim who believed him, if you stay in my word, you are truly my taught ones,

32 and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33 they answered him, we are the seed of aḇraham, and have been servants to no one at any time. how do you say, ‘you shall become free’?

34 יהושע answered them, truly, truly, i say to you, everyone doing sin is a servant of sin.

35 and the servant does not stay in the house forever – a son stays forever.

36 if, then, the son makes you free, you shall be free indeed

9:4-5, 39-41

4 it is necessary for me to work the works of him who sent me while it is day – night is coming, when no one is able to work.

5 while i am in the world, i am the light of the world...

39 and יהושע said, for judgment i have come into this world, that those not seeing might see, and those seeing might become blind.

40 and those of the pharisees who were with him heard these words, and said to him, are we blind, too?”

41 יהושע said to them, if you were blind, you would have no sin, but now you say, ‘we see,’ therefore your sin remains

  • ...came to make the blind see...

1 truly, truly, i say to you, he who does not enter through the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up by another way, that one is a thief and a robber.

2 but he who enters through the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

3 the doorkeeper opens for him, and the sheep hear his voice. and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

4 and when he has brought out his own sheep, he goes before them. and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice.

5 and they shall by no means follow a stranger, but shall flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.

6 יהושע used this figure of speech, but they did not know what he had been saying to them.

7 יהושע therefore said to them again, truly, truly, i say to you, i am the door of the sheep.

8 all who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.

9 i am the door. whoever enters through me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and shall go out and find pasture.

10 the thief does not come except to steal, and to slaughter, and to destroy. i have come that they might possess life, and that they might possess it beyond measure.

11 i am the good shepherd. the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep

  • a parable...

12:27-28, 46-50

27 now i myself am troubled, and what shall i say? ‘father, save me from this hour’? but for this reason i came to this hour.

28 father, esteem your name. then a voice came from the heaven, i have both esteemed it and shall esteem it again...

46 i have come as a light into the world, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

47 and if anyone hears my words but does not watch over them, i do not judge him. for i did not come to judge the world but to save the world.

48 he who rejects me, and does not receive my words, has one who judges him: the word that i have spoken shall judge him in the last day.

49 because i spoke not from myself, but the father who sent me has given me a command, what i should say and what i should speak.

50 and i know that his command is everlasting life. therefore, whatever i speak, as the father has said to me, so i speak

13:5-10, 15

5 after that he put water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the taught ones, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.

6 and so he came to shimʽon kĕpha, and he said to him, master, do you wash my feet?

7 יהושע answered and said to him, you do not know what i am doing now, but you shall know after this.

8 kĕpha said to him, “by no means shall you wash my feet, ever! יהושע answered him, if i do not wash you, you have no part with me.

9 shimʽon kĕpha said to him, master, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!

10 יהושע said to him, he who has had a bath does not need to wash, except his feet, but is clean altogether. and you are clean, but not all of you...

15 for i gave you an example, that you should do as i have done to you

  • to wash eash others feet = to show to each other how to live the torah (teachings of yhwh), because that is what makes us clean

15 no longer do i call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing. but i have called you friends, for all teachings which i heard from my father i have made known to you

  • to be a friend is to know the teachings of yhwh

17:2-4, 6-8, 14-26

2 as you have given him authority over all flesh, that he should give everlasting life to all whom you have given him.

3 and this is everlasting life, that they should know you, the only true elohim, and יהושע messiah whom you have sent.

4 i have esteemed you on the earth, having accomplished the work you have given me that i should do...

6 i have revealed your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world. they were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have guarded your word.

7 now they have come to know that all you gave to me, is from you.

8 because the words which you gave to me, i have given to them. and they have received them, and have truly known that i came forth from you, and they believed that you sent me...

14 i have given them your word, and the world hated them because they are not of the world, as i am not of the world.

15 i do not pray that you should take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the wicked one.

16 they are not of the world, as I am not of the world.

17 set them apart in your truth – your word is truth.

18 as you sent me into the world, i also sent them into the world.

19 and for them i set myself apart, so that they too might be set apart in truth.

20 and i do not pray for these alone, but also for those believing in me through their word,

21 so that they all might be one, as you, father, are in me, and i in you, so that they too might be one in us, so that the world might believe that you have sent me.

22 and the esteem which you gave me i have given them, so that they might be one as we are one,

23 i in them, and you in me, so that they might be perfected into one, so that the world knows that you have sent me, and have loved them as you have loved me.

24 father, i desire that those whom you have given me, might be with me where I am, so that they see my esteem which you have given me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world.

25 o righteous father, indeed the world did not know you, but i knew you, and these knew that you sent me.

26 and i have made your name known to them, and shall make it known, so that the love with which you loved me might be in them, and i in them

  • john 17:21 is where we should be at when we accepted the words of yhwh as to be the truth, no matter who showed them to us...but most of us are stuck at luke 12:52 for from now on five in one house shall be divided, three against two, and two against three – luke 12:53 father shall be divided against son, and son against father, mother against daughter, and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law...we should be one as yhwh is one
  • what does it mean to say before the foundation of the world?
  • what does it mean to make yhwh's name known to us?

22 for mosheh truly said to the fathers, ‘יהוה your elohim shall raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. him you shall hear according to all matters, whatever he says to you.

23 ‘and it shall be that every being who does not hear that prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people

  • the words of a prophet is the words of yhwh, and if we do not hear those words of abba we will be destroyed

31 him, a prince and a saviour, elohim has exalted to his right hand, to give repentance to yisra’ĕl and forgiveness of sins

  • acts 3:17-20 and now, brothers, i know that you did it in ignorance, as your rulers did too. 18 but this is how elohim has filled what he had announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his messiah was to suffer. 19 repent therefore and turn back, for the blotting out of your sins, in order that times of refreshing might come from the presence of the master, 20 and that he sends יהושע messiah, pre-appointed for you
  • Eze 33:14 again, when i say to the wrong, ‘you shall certainly die,’ if he turns from his sin and does right and righteousness, 15 if the wrong restores the pledge, gives back what he has stolen, and walks in the laws of life without doing crookedness, he shall certainly live; he shall not die. 16 none of his sins which he has committed shall be remembered against him – he has done right and righteousness; he shall certainly live

37 this is the mosheh who said to the children of yisra’ĕl, ‘יהוה your elohim shall raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. him you shall hear

  • listen to the words of yhwh that the prophet brings...messiah brought the words of yhwh, we should listen

36 he sent the word to the children of yisra’ĕl, bringing the good news: peace through יהושע messiah! he is master of all.

37 you know what word came to be throughout all yehuḏah, beginning from galil after the immersion which yoḥanan proclaimed:

38 how elohim did anoint יהושע of natsareth with the set-apart spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for elohim was with him.

39 and we are witnesses of all he did, both in the country of the yehuḏim and in yerushalayim, whom they even killed by hanging on a timber.

40 elohim raised up this one on the third day, and let him be seen,

41 not to all the people, but to witnesses, those having been chosen before by elohim – to us who ate and drank with him after he arose from the dead.

42 and he commanded us to proclaim to the people, and to witness that it is he who was appointed by elohim to be judge of the living and the dead.

43 to this One all the prophets bear witness, that through his name, everyone believing in him does receive forgiveness of sins

  • what does it mean to be oppressed by the devil?
  • through his name, everyone believing in him...what does this mean?

23 that the messiah would suffer, would be the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light to the people and to the gentiles

26 and so all yisra’ĕl shall be saved, as it has been written, the deliverer shall come out of tsiyon, and he shall turn away wickedness from yaʽaqob

1 corinthians

24 but to those who are called – both yehuḏim and greeks – messiah the power of elohim and the wisdom of elohim

2 corinthians

18 and all matters are from elohim, who has restored us to favour with himself through יהושע messiah, and has given us the service of restoration to favour,

19 that is, that elohim was in messiah restoring the world to favour unto himself, not reckoning their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of restoration to favour.

13 messiah redeemed us from the curse of the torah, having become a curse for us – for it has been written, cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree.

14 in order that the blessing of aḇraham might come upon the nations in messiah יהושע, to receive the promise of the spirit through belief

  • what is the curse of the torah? - deut 28:15 and it shall be, if you do not obey the voice of יהוה your elohim, to guard to do all his commands and his laws which i command you today, that all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you... deut 28:45 and all these curses shall come upon you, and they shall pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of יהוה your elohim, to guard his commands and his laws which he commanded you
  • to know the blessings and curses, read deut 28 through to the end of chapter 32

1 in the freedom with which messiah has made us free, stand firm, then, and do not again be held with a yoke of slavery

13 but now in messiah יהושע you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of the messiah.

14 for he is our peace, who has made both one, and having broken down the partition of the barrier,

15 having abolished in his flesh the enmity – the laws of the commands in dogma – so as to create in himself one renewed man from the two, thus making peace,

16 and to completely restore to favour both of them unto elohim in one body through the stake, having destroyed the enmity by it

  • what is the meaning of blood?
  • how are we restored to favour?
  • eze37:15 and the word of יהוה came to me, saying, 16 and you, son of man, take a stick for yourself and write on it, ‘for yehuḏah and for the children of yisra’ĕl, his companions.’ then take another stick and write on it, ‘for yosĕph, the stick of ephrayim, and for all the house of yisra’ĕl, his companions.’ 17 then bring them together for yourself into one stick, and they shall become one in your hand. 18 and when the children of your people speak to you, saying, ‘won’t you show us what you mean by these?’ 19 say to them, ‘thus said the master יהוה, see, i am taking the stick of yosĕph, which is in the hand of ephrayim, and the tribes of yisra’ĕl, his companions. and i shall give them unto him, with the stick of yehuḏah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in my hand. 20 and the sticks on which you write shall be in your hand before their eyes. 21 and speak to them, ‘thus said the master יהוה, see, i am taking the children of yisra’ĕl from among the gentiles, wherever they have gone, and shall gather them from all around, and i shall bring them into their land. 22 andiI shall make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of yisra’ĕl. and one sovereign shall be sovereign over them all, and let them no longer be two nations, and let them no longer be divided into two reigns. 23 and they shall no longer defile themselves with their idols, nor with their disgusting matters, nor with any of their transgressions. and i shall save them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned, and i shall cleanse them. and they shall be my people, and i be their elohim, 24 while dawiḏ my servant is sovereign over them. and they shall all have one shepherd and walk in my right-rulings and guard my laws, and shall do them. 25 and they shall dwell in the land that i have given to yaʽaqoḇ my servant, where your fathers dwelt. and they shall dwell in it, they and their children and their children’s children, forever, and my servant dawiḏ be their prince forever. 26 and i shall make a covenant of peace with them – an everlasting covenant it is with them. and i shall place them and increase them, and shall place my set-apart place in their midst, forever. 27 and my dwelling place shall be over them. and i shall be their elohim, and they shall be my people. 28 and the gentiles shall know that i, יהוה, am setting yisra’ĕl apart, when my set-apart place is in their midst – forever

20 and through him to completely restore to favour all unto himself, whether on earth or in the heavens, having made peace through the blood of his stake.

21 and you, who once were estranged and enemies in the mind by wicked works, but now he has completely restored to favour

22 in the body of his flesh through death, to present you set-apart, and blameless, and unreprovable before him,

23 if indeed you continue in the belief, founded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the expectation of the good news which you heard, which was proclaimed to every creature under the heaven, of which i, sha’ul, became a servant

  • ...again, what is the good news?

1 thessalonians

9 because elohim did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain deliverance through our master יהושע messiah,

10 who died for us, so that we, whether awake or asleep, should live together with him.

11 therefore encourage one another, and build up one another, as indeed you do

1 timothy

15 trustworthy is the word and worthy of all acceptance, that messiah יהושע came into the world to save sinners, of whom i am foremost

2 timothy

10 but now revealed by the appearing of our saviour יהושע messiah, who indeed abolished death and brought life and incorruptibility to light through the good news

  • what death did messiah abolisheed through the light of the good news?

2 timothy

5 and if anyone competes in a game, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.

6 the hard-working farmer ought to be first to receive his share of the crops

14 who gave himself for us, to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people, his own possession, ardent for good works

  • redeemed us from - lawlessness

4 but when the kindness and the love of elohim our saviour toward man appeared,

5 he saved us, not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to his compassion, through the washing of rebirth, and renewal by the set-apart spirit,

6 which he poured out on us richly through יהושע messiah our saviour

  • why do we wash?

1 elohim, having of old spoken in many portions and many ways to the fathers by the prophets,

2 has in these last days spoken to us by the son, whom he has appointed heir of all, through whom also he made the ages,

3 who being the brightness of the esteem and the exact representation of his substance, and sustaining all by the word of his power, having made a cleansing of our sins through himself, sat down at the right hand of the greatness on high

14 therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, he himself similarly shared in the same, so that by means of his death he might destroy him having the power of death, that is, the devil,

15 and deliver those who throughout life were held in slavery by fear of death

  • who and what is the devil?
  • what death was destroyed

22 and, according to the torah, almost all is cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

23 it was necessary, then, that the copies of the heavenly ones should be cleansed with these, but the heavenly ones themselves with better slaughter offerings than these.

19 so, brothers, having boldness to enter into the set-apart place by the blood of יהושע,

20 by a new and living way which he instituted for us, through the veil, that is, his flesh,

21 and having a high priest over the house of elohim,

22 let us draw near with a true heart in completeness of belief, having our hearts sprinkled from a wicked conscience and our bodies washed with clean water

  • what does blood mean here?
  • how do we become priests in yhwh's order, and what would that mean we would have to do?

18 for you have not drawn near to a mountain touched and scorched with fire, and to blackness, and darkness and storm,

19 and a sound of a trumpet, and a voice of words, so that those who heard it begged that no further word should be spoken to them,

20 for they could not bear what was commanded, if even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned or shot through with an arrow.”

21 and so fearsome was the sight that mosheh said, i exceedingly fear and tremble.

22 but you have drawn near to mount tsiyon and to the city of the living elohim, to the heavenly yerushalayim, to myriads of messengers,

23 to the entire gathering and assembly of the first-born having been enrolled in heaven, and to elohim the judge of all, and to the spirits of righteous men made perfect,

24 and to יהושע the mediator of a new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling which speaks better than the blood of heḇel.

25 take heed not to refuse the one speaking. for if those did not escape who refused the warning on earth, much less we who turn away from him from heaven,

12 and so יהושע also suffered outside the gate, to set apart the people with his own blood

  • set-apart the people with his own blood, what does this mean?

1 peter

21 for to this you were called, because messiah also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow his steps, 22 who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth, 23 who, being reviled, did not revile in return; suffering, did not threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously;

24 who himself bore our sins in his body on the timber, so that we, having died to sins, might live unto righteousness – by whose stripes you were healed.

25 for you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the shepherd and overseer of your lives

  • eze 4:4 and lie on your left side, and you shall put the crookedness of the house of Yisra’ĕl on it. as many days as you lie on it, you shall bear their crookedness. 5 for i myself have laid on you the years of their crookedness, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days. and you shall bear the crookedness of the house of yisra’ĕl. 6 and when you have completed them, you shall lie again on your right side and shall bear the crookedness of the house of yehuḏah forty days, a day for a year. i have laid on you a day for a year.
  • eze 18:18 his father, because he used oppression, robbed his brother, and did what is not good among his people, see, he shall die for his crookedness. 19 and you said, ‘why should the son not bear the crookedness of the father?’ but the son has done right-ruling and righteousness, he has guarded all my laws and he does them, he shall certainly live
  • exo 32:30 and it came to be on the next day that mosheh said to the people, you, you have sinned a great sin. and now i am going up to יהוה – if i might atone for your sin. 31 and mosheh returned to יהוה and said, oh, these people have sinned a great sin, and have made for themselves a mighty one of gold! 32 and now, if You would forgive their sin, but if not, please blot me out of your book which you have written. 33 and יהוה said to mosheh, whoever has sinned against me, i blot him out of my book. 34 and now, go, lead the people to the place of which i have spoken to you. see, my messenger goes before you. and in the day of my visitation i shall visit their sin upon them. 35 and יהוה plagued the people because they made the calf, which aharon made

1 peter

18 because even messiah once suffered for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to elohim, having been put to death indeed in flesh but made alive in the spirit,

19 in which also he went and proclaimed unto the spirits in prison,

20 who were disobedient at one time when the patience of elohim waited in the days of noaḥ, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight beings, were saved through water

  • death indeed in the flesh = the first death (phicycal death came because of sin)...all have to die the first death
  • spirits in the prison, what is this?

1 john

4 everyone doing sin also does lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.

5 and you know that he was manifested to take away our sins, and in him there is no sin.

6 everyone staying in him does not sin. everyone sinning has neither seen him nor known him.

7 little children, let no one lead you astray. the one doing righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

:8 the one doing sin is of the devil, because the devil has sinned from the beginning. for this purpose the son of elohim was manifested: to destroy the works of the devil

  • to have seen and to know yhwh and his son, is to not sin

1 john

9 by this the love of elohim was manifested in us, that elohim has sent his only brought-forth son into the world, in order that we might live through him

1 john

5:11, 20

11 and this is the witness: that elohim has given us everlasting life, and this life is in his son...

20 and we know that the son of elohim has come and has given us an understanding, so that we might know the true one. and we are in the true one, in his son יהושע messiah. this is the true elohim and everlasting life

5 and from יהושע messiah, the trustworthy witness, the first-born from the dead, and the ruler of the sovereigns of the earth. to him who loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

6 and has made us sovereigns and priests to his elohim and father, to him be esteem and rule forever and ever. amĕn

9 and they sang a renewed song, saying, you are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals, because you were slain, and have redeemed us to elohim by your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,

10 and made us sovereigns and priests to our elohim, and we shall reign upon the earth
